1. What is the missing number in the sequence: -5, -2, 1, …, 7?

A. 2

B. 3

C. 4

D. 5

Answer: C

Solution

The rule for the sequence appears to be to add 3 to a number to get the next one.

Hence, we add 3 to -5 to get -2.

We add 3 to -2 to get 1.

If we add 3 to 1, we will get 4.

Adding 3 to that gives 7, which is already in the sequence.

2. The population of a town is 56782. What is this number to three significant figures?

A. 567

B. 568

C. 56700

D. 56800

Answer: D

Solution

The first three significant digits in the number 56782 are 5, 6, and 7. The number right after 7 is 8. Since it is greater than 5, we round up the 7 to get 56800 as the number’s representation to three significant figures.

3. When 0.24 is expressed in the lowest form as \( \displaystyle \frac{a}{b} \), the denominator is

A. 2

B. 5

C. 25

D. 125

Answer: C

Solution

0.24 may be written as \( \displaystyle \frac{24}{100} \). Dividing both the numerator and denominator in the fraction by their greatest common divisor, 4, we obtain the fraction in its lowest terms as \( \displaystyle \frac{6}{25} \).

4. A farmer feeds 20 goats with 500 kg of cassava. How many goats can be fed with 200 kg of cassava?

A. 2

B. 5

C. 8

D. 10

Answer: C

Solution

This is a question involving direct proportions between a number of goats and how much food they need. More goats will need more food and fewer goat will need less food.

The ratios may be written as 20 : 500 as n : 200.

We may solve for n by writing the ratios as fractions and setting them equal to each other. Doing so gives

$$ \frac{20}{500} = \frac{n}{200} $$

Multiplying both sides by 200 gives

$$ \frac{20}{500} \times 200 = \frac{n}{200} \times 200 $$

This simplifies to

$$ n = \frac{20}{500} \times 200 = 8 $$

5. A man spends GH₵ 560.00 out of his weekly wage of GH₵ 700.00 and saves the rest. What percentage did he save?

A. 10%

B. 15%

C. 20%

D. 25%

Answer: C

Solution

The amount of money the man saved is GH₵ (700.00 – 560.00) = GH₵ 140. Writing this as a percentage of GH₵ 700.00, we get

$$ \frac{140}{700} \times 100\% $$

This quantity simplifies to 20%.
